Go, I Will Be With You Always
Matthew 28:16-20
16 The eleven disciples went to the hill in Galilee where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him, even though some of them doubted.
18 Jesus drew near and said to them, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19
Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize
them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 20 and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.”

Flowing into the World
Sermon given at Evans United Methodist Church

Flowing into the World
John 4:37-40
37 On the last and most important day of the festival Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, “Whoever is thirsty should come to me, and 38 whoever believes in me should drink. As the scripture says, ‘Streams of life-giving water will pour out from his side.’” 39 Jesus said this about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were going to receive. At that time the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not been raised to glory.
40 Some of the people in the crowd heard him say this and said, “This man is really the Prophet!”

Becoming One In Ministry
John 17:1-11
1 After Jesus finished saying this, he looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your Son, so that the Son may give glory to you. 2 For you gave him authority over all people, so that he might give eternal life to all those you gave him. 3 And eternal life means to know you, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ, whom you sent. 4 I have shown your glory on earth; I have finished the work you gave me to do. 5 Father! Give me glory in your presence now, the same glory I had with you before the world was made.
9 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those you gave me, for they belong to you. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine; and my glory is shown through them. 11 And
now I am coming to you; I am no longer in the world, but they are in
the world. Holy Father! Keep them safe by the power of your name, the
name you gave me, so that they may be one just as you and I are one.

gave them the message that you gave me, and they received it; they know
that it is true that I came from you, and they believe that you sent
me.

Becoming One With Each Other
John 14:15-27
15 “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God. The world cannot receive him, because it cannot see him or know him. But you know him, because he remains with you and is in you.

18 “When I go, you will not be left all alone; I will come back to you. 19 In a little while the world will see me no more, but you will see me; and because I live, you also will live. 20 When that day comes, you will know that I am in my Father and that you are in me, just as I am in you.
21
“Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love
me. My Father will love those who love me; I too will love them and
reveal myself to them.”
22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “Lord, how can it be that you will reveal yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus
answered him, “Those who love me will obey my teaching. My Father will
love them, and my Father and I will come to them and live with them. 24 Those
who do not love me do not obey my teaching. And the teaching you have
heard is not mine, but comes from the Father, who sent me.
25 “I have told you this while I am still with you. 26 The
Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.
27 “Peace
is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not
give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be
afraid.

Becoming One in Christ
John 14:1-14
1 “Do not be worried and upset,” Jesus told them. “Believe in God and believe also in me. 2 There are many rooms in my Father's house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so. 3 And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am. 4 You know the way that leads to the place where I am going.”

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going; so how can we know the way to get there?”
6 Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me.
7 Now that you have known me,” he said to them, “you will know my Father also, and from now on you do know him and you have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father; that is all we need.”
9 Jesus
answered, “For a long time I have been with you all; yet you do not
know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. Why, then, do
you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do
you not believe, Philip, that I am in the Father and the Father is in
me? The words that I have spoken to you,” Jesus said to his disciples,
“do not come from me. The Father, who remains in me, does his own work.
11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. If not, believe because of the things I do. 12 I
am telling you the truth: those who believe in me will do what I
do—yes, they will do even greater things, because I am going to the
Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask for in my name, so that the Father's glory will be shown through the Son. 14 If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.

Awakening to Baptism

Awakening to Baptism
What does "The Good Shepherd" have to do with baptism?
Baptism isn't just an event, it is a way of life.
John 10:1-10
1 Jesus said, “I am telling you the truth: the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The man who goes in through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him; the sheep hear his voice as he calls his own sheep by name, and he leads them out. 4 When he has brought them out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. 5 They will not follow someone else; instead, they will run away from such a person, because they do not know his voice.”

6 Jesus told them this parable, but they did not understand what he meant.
7 So Jesus said again, “I am telling you the truth: I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All others who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the gate. Those who come in by me will be saved; they will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 The
thief comes only in order to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come in
order that you might have life—life in all its fullness.

Awakening to Transformation
Luke 24:13-35
13 On that same day two of Jesus' followers were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking to each other about all the things that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them; 16 they saw him, but somehow did not recognize him. 17 Jesus said to them, “What are you talking about to each other, as you walk along?”

They stood still, with sad faces. 18 One
of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only visitor in
Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that have been happening there
these last few days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
“The
things that happened to Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man
was a prophet and was considered by God and by all the people to be
powerful in everything he said and did. 20 Our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and he was crucified. 21 And
we had hoped that he would be the one who was going to set Israel free!
Besides all that, this is now the third day since it happened. 22 Some of the women of our group surprised us; they went at dawn to the tomb, 23 but could not find his body. They came back saying they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive. 24 Some of our group went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they did not see him.”
25 Then Jesus said to them, “How foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! 26 Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and then to enter his glory?” 27 And
Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the
Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and the writings of all
the prophets.
28 As they came near the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther; 29 but they held him back, saying, “Stay with us; the day is almost over and it is getting dark.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 He sat down to eat with them, took the bread, and said the blessing; then he broke the bread and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. 32 They
said to each other, “Wasn't it like a fire burning in us when he talked
to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
33 They got up at once and went back to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven disciples gathered together with the others 34 and saying, “The Lord is risen indeed! He has appeared to Simon!”
35 The two then explained to them what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized the Lord when he broke the bread.
